Eye on Scams: A warning on synthetic identity theft
KLFY
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)– Con-artists are creating synthetic identities, using the personal information of multiple people. They commit credit card fraud using multiple victims’ information.
Brielle Blanchard, Interim CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Acadiana, said con-artists collect one person’s social security number, another person’s home address and a different person’s name.
“They create the credit profile. At first, they’ll be declined because they don’t have a credit history,” Blanchard said. “But eventually they’ll build upon that credit history and then are able to take out credit cards.”
