Local check fraud cases increase

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The number of checks we use to pay for things is down, but the amount of check fraud is up.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an increase in check fraud. It wants you to be vigilant.
Investigators say fraudsters are stealing mail, looking for checks, and then selling these checks to other people.
In other cases they’re altering information on the check. They might “wash” it to remove the ink, rewrite the check and cash it themselves.
