2 charged with forgery after printing fake checks in Iowa hotel
KCCI Des Moines
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) —
Two people have been charged with four counts of forgery each after police say they discovered a check printing scheme at an Iowa City hotel in December 2022, according to KCRG.
Criminal complaints for 44-year-old Marcus Turner, of Coralville, say he and another suspect ran the scheme at a room at Hotel Chauncey, at 404 E College St. in Iowa City, which they had rented under fake names.
However, police said Turner accidentally referred to himself by his real name to hotel staff. Investigators said they later used surveillance recordings to identify the man as Turner.
Hotel staff tried to evict Turner and the other suspect, whose name has not been released by officials, on two occasions, but they fled the scene before officers arrived both times.
