LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Internal Revenue Service special agents in Las Vegas warn that this year, potential scams related to many COVID-19 relief measures, including stimulus checks, and unemployment benefits, are on the rise.
IRS investigators said in some cases tax preparers are using their client’s personal information to commit fraud.
Dave Mesler, IRS Assistant Special Agent said abusive return preparers can manipulate income figures to get fraudulent tax credits, such as the earned income tax credit or some of the new provisions created during the COVID-19 pandemic.
