11 more plead guilty in ‘magazine case,’ the nation’s largest elder fraud scheme to date – Twin Cities
Minnesota Emnetra
The FBI dismantles the network Bill 60 people in October Against their role in what authorities call Minnesota’s largest elder fraud program and the largest single conspiracy prosecution.
A 20-year scam has used fake magazine subscriptions to flee at least 150,000 victims from all 50 states.
Defendants will call victim consumers who had one or more existing magazine subscriptions and offer to reduce the cost of existing subscriptions. Defendants tricked victims into signing up for a brand new magazine subscription, but they didn’t want it and often couldn’t afford it. As a result, many victims were billed each month by several and even dozens of magazine companies. Some have been scammed for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Other “mega victims” have been scammed from over $ 50,000.
