A TikTok hacking may start with a login alert you did not trigger, a video you never posted, your family members wondering why you sent them a money request on social media or a friend asking why you sent them a strange link. In June 2024, attackers took over high-profile accounts including those of CNN, Paris Hilton and Sony, and TikTok said it had taken measures to stop the attack. Most takeovers are less public — and they usually begin with a leaked password or a fake offer sent via direct message. If you find yourself a victim of a TikTok hacking, there are ways to tell whether someone got in and actions to take to recover the account.
TikTok is reasonably safe if you treat it like any large social platform. Norton says the app may not be riskier than other social networks and is unlikely to infect your phone, but accounts do get hijacked, scams circulate and the service collects a lot of data.
