Earlier this week, I received a highly disturbing email from an app that I recently downloaded, informing me that it's possible that I had entered my Social Security Number (SSN) into a scammer website. Though no evidence of fraud had taken place (yet), I was immediately concerned.
I was told that the app couldn't verify exactly what happened, and they also offered no potential solution. Because this app (like so many) has replaced traditional customer service with AI chatbots, the answers I got didn't answer the questions I was asking.
When I sent specific questions about my social security number, what could have happened, where this potential scammer got my information, and how to proceed, I was sent a generic text about what to do if I had shared my password app on the web. Wait. What? That wasn't even my question.
