Law enforcement is investigating and the Hampton County School District is now taking increased precautions after an almost-successful cyber attack last week.
In a joint statement with the Hampton County Sheriff's Office, the H.C. School District revealed Friday that it had been targeted by a "bold and highly sophisticated social engineering scam" conducted by a "cyber thief."
Last week, employees of the district received a series of emails that appeared to be from its chief financial officer, directing payment by wire transfer for invoiced worker salary and benefits reimbursement, but were coming from an outside cyber thief using detailed information improperly obtained from an unknown source.
