A Madison Police Department stop of a vehicle on Interstate 55 led to the arrest of five people in an alleged multi-state rental car theft ring where vehicles were rented using fraudulent credit cards and later reported stolen.

Madison PD spokesman Capt. Kevin Newman said that on Tuesday around 4:30 p.m., an officer stopped a truck on southbound I-55 near the 107-mile marker in the city.

The officer noticed the tag was switched on the truck and discovered the vehicle was listed as stolen from Carmel, Indiana, Newman said.

The five people in the vehicle , three from Chicago and two from Gary, Indiana, are charged with receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit identity theft. They are being held in the Madison County Detention Center without bond.
