'Imposter' scams up in New York for 2019

Whether it's through an email, text message or a seemingly-harmless phone call, scammers are out there.

The Federal Trade Commission reports fraud is one of the most common crimes throughout the United States right now.

Here in New York the FTC reports we're seeing a spike in 'imposter' scams.

They're the calls where the person on the other end is not who they say they are

"Here we have over 10,000 of those scams reported last year nationally to BBB. It's all of them, it's the phone company called and says I have to pay right now or they're going to shut me off. I got an email from Amazon saying they froze my account," explained Melanie McGovern of the Better Business Bureau.
