Don't cash that check: Fake check scams bait consumers

Jackson Sun

Paradoxically, consumers are writing fewer and fewer real checks while at the same time falling for more and more scams involving fake checks. That was the finding of a comprehensive study titled “Don’t Cash That Check: BBB Study Shows How Fake Check Scams Bait Consumers” conducted by Steve Baker, BBB International Investigations Specialist.

Complaints to the Better Business Bureau, government and other agencies about fake check scams have doubled over the past three years. Millions of fake checks worth billions of dollars circulate every year. “Fake check fraud is an exploding epidemic,” says Elaine Dodd, executive vice president of the Oklahoma Bankers Association.

The checks are often high quality, counterfeited copies of the checks of real companies. Fake bank cashier checks and phony bank or postal money orders are also used in the scams.
